The two are suspected of abandoning a newborn girl in a pit toilet at the Masbekela Trust near Mbuzini
MBOMBELA – A 23-year-old woman and her 32-year-old sister will appear at the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court facing concealment of birth as well as attempted murder charges today.
The two women will appear on these charges following a preliminary investigation by SAPS which identified the two suspects. According to information released by Brig Leonard Hlati of SAPS, the 23-year-old suspect had given birth to a child on Tuesday morning, and was aided by her sister.
Members of the public summoned the police to the sound of a small child coming from a public toilet not far from the suspects’ parental home.
“The pair were taken into custody after the mother had been taken to hospital for checkups,” said Hlati.
According to Hlati, the Provincial Commissioner of the police in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma urged parents, especially young mothers, not to attempt to get rid of their offspring due to prevailing circumstances of difficulty or despair, but to seek assistance from relevant avenues.
“There are social workers who are readily available to receive your unwanted baby and to facilitate adoption processes with couples who are desperate for a child”, said the General.
