The United National Transport Union has demanded that all train services in and around Cape Town be suspended until the safety of train drivers, security staff and passengers is guaranteed.

It follows after a security guard died at the Chris Hani station in Khayelitsha on Tuesday night. He was shot during an armed robbery at the station.

MetroRail is planning for a security fence to secure stations. The cost will be in the region of R68 million, but experience has shown that no fence or wall halts criminals from their activities.

Richard Walker, Metro Rail Regional Manager, has now suspended all train services on the central line.
