On Tuesday 26 December 2017 at approximately 23:00, SAPS members from Operation Combat were busy doing foot patrols in the informal settlement of Village Heights after receiving information about illegal activities ranging from the dealing in drugs and illegal firearms.
Whilst patrolling, the members came under attack by unknown assailants and were repeatedly fired at. The SAPS members tactically split up and returned fire and the suspects fled the scene. The members then combed the area and came across a 9mm CZ pistol, of which the serial number had been filed off, as well as a magazine and 8 x live 9mm rounds of ammunition.
The assault on the SAPS members continued and they therefore had to withdraw from the scene. A short while later, they were contacted and informed that a 21-year-old male was taken from Village Heights to a local hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the shoulder and neck.
The suspect, a resident of Village Heights, was subsequently arrested on charges of attempted murder, possession of a prohibited firearm and illegal ammunition and the discharging of a firearm in a municipal area. The suspect, who is currently under police guard is expected to appear in the Muizenberg Magistrates’ Court once discharge from hospital.
No SAPS member was injured during this shooting incident.
