Ephedrine with a street value of R1.3 million was found at a Kempton Park guest house on Tuesday afternoon.

Ekurhuleni Metro Police’s drug enforcement unit acted on a tip off received from a reliable source which led to the uncovering of 21, one kilogram bags of ephedrine valued at about R60 000 each, Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, metro police spokesperson, said.

A 43-year-old Nigerian man was arrested and detained at Kempton Park Police Station

Kgasago said ephedrine is an expensive ingredient usually used in the manufacturing of cat and cocaine. It was found in the man’s room at a guest house at 3pm.

“Information received indicated the ephedrine was temporarily kept at the guest house and was destined for manufacturing plants. The swift and timely action of the EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit managed to intercept the illicit goods,” Kgasago added.
